In my opinion the rule of thirds does not work for this photo, maybe it is because of the subject. I had taken a ride down a local back road on Friday. This beautiful home, surrounded by incredible gardens and landscapes sits on a very sharp curve. I backed into the driveway and explained to the elderly couple that I was taking a photography class and their gardens would be wonderful subjects. They graciously invited me to take as many pictures as I wanted. As I walked to the back of the property this memorial, in all of it's glory, stood proudly above the rolling meadows and pond below.

Karen, I agree that this subject seemed to work best with it centered. Having it off center seems to detract from the simple beauty of the statue and flag by bringing in more background.
